The final assault on the Gustav Line.
This rare defence overprint map from the II Polish Corps shows German defensive positions in the area surrounding Monte Cassino, one of the most heavily fortified points on the Gustav Line. Used for operational planning, the map highlights enemy strongpoints, fortifications, and terrain features that made Cassino one of the most challenging battles of the Italian Campaign.
On 16 May 1944, the II Polish Corps launched one of the final assaults on the German defences as part of a twenty-division offensive along a twenty-mile front. Two days later, Polish troops captured the ruins of the abbey, raising the Polish flag, followed by the Union Jack, above Monte Cassino — a powerful symbol of Allied victory and sacrifice.
This reproduction preserves the original markings and annotations of a classified wartime map once stamped “SECRET”, offering a unique glimpse into the planning behind one of the most iconic battles in Italy.
