A hand-drawn record of courage on the road to liberation.
This map captures the 6th Canadian Infantry Brigade’s crossing of the Antwerp–Turnhout Canal on 26 September 1944, as the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division fought its way toward the Dutch border. Hand-drawn during the campaign, it shows the positions of the South Saskatchewan Regiment, The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, and Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal during their determined assault to secure the canal crossings north of Antwerp.
The operation was one of several actions that paved the way for the liberation of the Scheldt Estuary — vital to opening the port of Antwerp for Allied supply lines. This map offers a rare view into the tactical movements and terrain known only to those who fought there.
