A soldier’s view of the battlefield south of Caen.

This hand-drawn sketch was created by Private Alfred Sales of the Regina Rifle Regiment on 1 July 1944, while the regiment was dug in along the Caen–Bayeux highway, overlooking the Carpiquet airfield. Drawn from the vantage point of an observation post, the sketch captures the terrain and tactical layout seen by Canadian infantrymen in the weeks leading up to the Battle of Caen.

Unlike official printed maps, this field sketch offers a uniquely personal record of the battlefield, blending tactical awareness with the immediacy of front-line experience.
